The Tao of Coaching is one of my favourite books about coaching. I’ve been coaching as part of my role for around 19 (count them) years, but been a qualified Executive Coach for “only” 12 of those.

To work with a senior chap who was going for an even more senior promotion. This wasn’t about interview practice. It was about much much more than that – to help someone reflect on their successes so far and how to build on those in a new and challenging role.
The challenge was one we encounter often in professional services: to get the technically gifted to be brilliant at talking to their various audiences.
It’s tempting to think that coaching is something that happens only to senior people or rising stars on account of its expensive nature and the time resource it needs. Not so. That might be true of executive coaching, but nowadays more people expect on the job coaching (where only some of an executive coach’s techniques are deployed) and more managers are training up to be able to do just that.
It’s not every day you get to facilitate above The Thames, but that’s where Tower Bridge is. It was a unique experience from the moment we got in the room to going through the secret door for our lunchtime tour.
