As you may have heard recently, one of the most talked about videos on YouTube at the moment is Tom from McFly’s wedding speech. It’s almost 15 minutes long, but trust me… it’s worth a watch!

But if that’s not your cup of tea don’t worry, because I’m going to summarise it in the next couple of paragraphs. He starts off by saying the following:

“So my wife can tell you that the only nerves and anxiety that I’ve had about the wedding has been giving this speech. I absolutely hate public speaking. Me and public speaking are just not compatible, we don’t go very well together at all, mainly because I have no idea how to write a good speech. But I do know how to write a song, so I hope this isn’t cheating my way out of it too much…”

So, in short, he sings a song instead of speaking. That’s pretty much it.

This got me thinking. If the lead singer of McFly – a band who have sold over 10 million records worldwide – hates public speaking… then what chance have the rest of us got?! The fact is, most of us are terrified of it. Even a survey of students at Harvard University had the fear of public speaking above dying!

Take 30 seconds to find out where you are on our Public Speaking Pyramid. You never know, you might be above that bloke who’s sold over 10 million records.

Do you enjoy doing it? Most of you; probably not.
Should you enjoy doing it? Maybe; a wee bit.
Can you get better at it? With a lot of practice and a bit of help; absolutely.

Just remember one thing, when you’re up there… It’s all about you.
